FAQ

Q: What is the time commitment to serve on the Board?

A: It can vary a lot by the role! At a minimum, all board members should be available to attend exec board meetings 4 times a year, which usually last 1-2 hours depending on the agenda and whether it is accompanied by a program. Some roles have duties that require time and attention during specific times of the year. For example, the Founders Day Chair will be busiest in the months and weeks leading up to Founders Day in October, and the Chapter Liaison will be active when local chapters are in school.  The amount of time put into a role also depends, to a great extent, on how much time you would like to spend developing the role. If there is a specific position that you'd like to discuss the potential time commitment for, feel free to reach out to Nominating Chair Maria at pittsburghkkg.specialcom@gmail.com.

Q: Will there be any training offered if I am new to a role?

A: Yes, there are lots of ways to learn the ins and outs of a Board position. Training can be provided by the outgoing officer, and we have reference documentation for most positions. We also have the support of an Alumna Relations Specialist, who is a national-level volunteer with Kappa Kappa Gamma that specializes in Alumnae Association operations and can work with you to get oriented to your role.

Q: I am currently serving on the Board. Do I need to submit a nomination to continue serving?

A: Yes. Although members may serve for multiple years consecutively, our election cycle is annual. The Nominating Committee depends on your nominations in order to create a vetted slate of candidates and to make an informed recommendation to the President for appointed roles.

Q: Can I be considered if I'm new to the Association or haven't attended an event before?

A: Yes! We have had several members join the Board as either newcomers to the Pittsburgh area or to the Association. As long as you are a Kappa alumna in good standing, meet the basic requirements of dues-paying membership and can fulfill the duties of the role, you are welcome to submit a nomination.

Q: Can I be considered if I'm a recent grad?

A: Yes! We have had members join the Board as brand new alums before. As long as you are a Kappa alumna in good standing, meet the basic requirements of dues-paying membership and can fulfill the duties of the role, you are welcome to submit a nomination.

Q: There is more than one position that I am interested in. Can I submit more than one nomination?

A: Yes. Just select all of the positions you're interested in on the nomination form.

Q: Is GPAA flexible in allowing for one person to hold multiple positions, or to have co-chairs?

A: Yes. Like many Alumnae Associations, we want to be flexible so as to allow an opportunity for members to serve in a way that is workable for both them and for the Association. In some Associations, the Secretary and Treasurer roles are combined, or Co-Chairs for larger roles such as Programming, Philanthropy, and some even have Co-Presidents! If this is something you're interested in, just indicate so on the nomination form.

Q: Can I submit a nomination on behalf of another member?

A: Yes, we encourage you to do so! Sometimes leaders are simply waiting to be asked. You may consider speaking with them first to confirm interest and willingness to serve, although that is not required to submit the nomination.

Q: I am unavailable for the Installation meeting. Can I still be nominated?

A: Yes, if you are elected and are unable to attend the Installation meeting, arrangements will be made to install you at a different date.

Q: Elections are over and I am interested in an open position. Can I still serve on the Board?

A: It's possible! Only our President, Secretary, and Treasurer must be elected, and not all appointed roles are filled immediately after elections. Check our Officers page at any time for openings.

Q: I've read through the position descriptions and I still have questions. Who can I talk to?
